1. Bacillus Calmette-Guérin
Medical · Infectious Disease Abbreviations
Live attenuated vaccine made from Mycobacterium bovis, given at birth in many countries to protect young children against severe forms of tuberculosis such as TB meningitis. It is not routinely used in the US. A separate use is intravesical BCG instilled into the bladder to treat early bladder cancer.
Example: Born in Manila, BCG scar left deltoid; prefer IGRA over skin test for TB screening.
Developed by Albert Calmette and Camille Guérin at the Pasteur Institute and first given to an infant in 1921, it is one of the oldest vaccines still in use. Protection against adult pulmonary TB is inconsistent. Prior BCG can cause a positive skin test but not a positive IGRA. Bladder instillation can rarely cause disseminated BCG infection.
