OCIA stands for Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, a religious term abbreviation.
Name used for the Catholic adult initiation process under a newer English translation of the ritual, replacing the long-familiar RCIA in American parishes. The content and stages of the process remain essentially the same.
Example: Parish bulletins now invite inquirers to OCIA sessions on Wednesday evenings.
Usage notes
The change from "Rite" to "Order" follows the Latin title, Ordo Initiationis Christianae Adultorum. Catholic liturgical books increasingly use "Order" for rites. Catechists often say "OCIA (formerly RCIA)" during the transition.
