RCIA stands for Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a religious term abbreviation.
Catholic process by which unbaptized adults, and often baptized Christians seeking full communion, are prepared over months of instruction and rituals for baptism, confirmation and first Communion, usually at the Easter Vigil. It was restored after the Second Vatican Council.
Example: He joined RCIA in September and was received into the church at the Easter Vigil.
Usage notes
The Vatican issued the restored rite in 1972, and US parishes implemented it widely from the late 1980s. Stages include inquiry, the catechumenate, purification and enlightenment, and mystagogy. US parishes are now adopting the newer English title, OCIA.
