1. Respiratory syncytial virus

Medical · Infectious Disease Abbreviations

Common respiratory virus that causes cold-like illness in most people but is the leading cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in US infants and a major cause of hospitalization in older adults. Seasonal epidemics typically peak in fall and winter.

Example: RSV PCR positive, 3-month-old with bronchiolitis, saturations 91 percent; admit for high-flow oxygen.

Prevention changed sharply in 2023: the FDA approved the first RSV vaccines for older adults and a maternal vaccine given at 32–36 weeks of pregnancy, and the long-acting antibody nirsevimab for infants. Treatment remains supportive. "Syncytial" refers to the giant fused cells (syncytia) the virus forms in culture.

2. Revised Standard Version

Religion · Religious Term Abbreviations

English translation sponsored by the National Council of Churches, with the New Testament in 1946 and the full Bible in 1952, revising the American Standard Version in modern but dignified language. It became the standard Bible of mainline Protestant churches in the mid-20th century.

Example: The Catholic edition of the RSV is still used in many Bible studies.

The RSV caused controversy by translating Isaiah 7:14 as "a young woman shall conceive" instead of "a virgin". A Catholic Edition (RSV-CE) appeared in 1966, and a Second Catholic Edition in 2006. It was succeeded by the NRSV in 1989 and revised by evangelicals as the ESV.
