Multiplex PCR test, usually on a nasopharyngeal swab, that detects many respiratory viruses and some bacteria at once, such as influenza, RSV, SARS-CoV-2, rhinovirus, adenovirus and human metapneumovirus. Results typically return within hours.

Example: RVP positive for rhinovirus/enterovirus only; continue supportive care, no antivirals needed.

Results guide isolation, antiviral use and antibiotic stopping, but detection of rhinovirus can persist for weeks and may not explain current illness. Panels vary by manufacturer, from a few to over 20 targets. Also called a respiratory pathogen panel (RPP). Cost has limited routine use in uncomplicated outpatient illness.
