Rep. stands for Representative, a title and honorific abbreviation also used in government and business.
Identifies a member of the US House of Representatives or of a state house, placed before the name. AP style uses Rep. before a full name and Reps. for several members.
Example: Rep. Nakamura will hold a town hall at the community center Saturday morning.
Usage notes
The House has 435 voting members apportioned by population and elected every two years, plus nonvoting delegates. AP writes "U.S. Rep." on first reference to distinguish members of Congress from state legislators. Some members prefer "Congressman" or "Congresswoman," which is not abbreviated. Elsewhere "rep" is a clipping for a sales representative or a repetition in exercise.
