CategoriesGovernment & Politics

Sen. stands for Senator, a political abbreviation also used in general use.

Title for a member of the US Senate or a state senate, abbreviated before a full name in news copy, as in "Sen. John Doe, R-Texas". The US Senate has 100 members, two per state, serving staggered six-year terms.

Example: Sen. Patel said she would vote against the nomination.

Usage notes

AP style abbreviates "Sen." only before a name and spells it out when used alone. Senators were chosen by state legislatures until the 17th Amendment, ratified in 1913, established direct election. About one-third of seats are up every two years, and a state's "senior senator" is the one with longer continuous service, not the older one.
