SCOTUS stands for Supreme Court of the United States, a political abbreviation also used in law.
Highest court in the federal judiciary, consisting of a Chief Justice and eight associate justices appointed for life by the President with Senate confirmation. It decides roughly 60 cases a year, mostly on appeal, and has the final say on federal and constitutional law.
Example: SCOTUS agreed to hear the case and will hold oral arguments in January.
Usage notes
The Constitution creates the Supreme Court, but Congress sets its size, which has been nine since 1869. Its term begins on the first Monday in October. Like POTUS, the abbreviation comes from the Phillips telegraph code and is pronounced "SKOH-tus". Its decisions are officially published in the United States Reports.
