Usage notes
Pronounced as letters. States name the offense differently: DUI in California, Florida and many others; DWI in Texas and New York; OWI in Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan; OUI in Massachusetts and Maine. Some states use two terms for different severities or substances. Penalties typically include license suspension, fines, possible jail, ignition interlock devices and higher insurance costs through SR-22 filings. Implied consent laws mean refusing a chemical test brings its own penalties. Alcohol-impaired crashes kill more than 10,000 people a year in the US.
