1. No further action

British police and prosecution decision to close a case without charging a suspect, for example because of insufficient evidence. An NFA can be revisited if new evidence emerges.
Example: After the interview, the suspect was released with NFA because the witness withdrew her statement.
Released suspects may also be "released under investigation" while inquiries continue. An NFA outcome may still appear on enhanced criminal record checks in some circumstances. In US gun law, NFA refers to the National Firearms Act of 1934.
2. National Firearms Act
Government & Politics · US Law Abbreviations
Law of 1934 that requires registration and a federal tax for machine guns, short-barreled rifles and shotguns, suppressors and destructive devices. Owners must obtain ATF approval and the items are recorded in a national registry.
Example: Buying the suppressor required an NFA application and fingerprints sent to the ATF.
Congress passed it in response to Prohibition-era gang violence. The $200 tax set in 1934 was never adjusted for inflation; the One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025 reduced it to zero for suppressors and short-barreled firearms beginning in 2026, though registration still applies. New machine guns for civilians were banned in 1986.
3. Not financial advice

A disclaimer added to social media posts and videos about investments, especially crypto, signaling that the author is sharing an opinion rather than professional advice.
Example: I'm buying more SOL this week. NFA, just my own plan.
The disclaimer offers little legal protection to people paid to promote an asset without saying so; US regulators have fined celebrities for undisclosed paid crypto promotions. It often appears alongside DYOR. In other contexts NFA can mean the National Futures Association or the National Firearms Act.
