NAGPRA stands for Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, a US law abbreviation.

Law of 1990 requiring museums and federal agencies to inventory Native American human remains, funerary objects and sacred objects in their collections and return them to lineal descendants and tribes. It also protects Native graves on federal and tribal land.

Example: The university returned the remains to the tribe after completing its NAGPRA consultation.

Usage notes

President George H. W. Bush signed it in November 1990. Repatriation proceeded slowly for decades; regulations effective in January 2024 strengthened consultation and consent requirements, leading several major museums to close or cover exhibits. It is usually pronounced "nag-PRAH".
