D&E stands for Dilation and evacuation, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Procedure for emptying the uterus in the second trimester, typically after about 13–14 weeks, using cervical preparation, suction and instruments. It is used for pregnancy loss, fetal demise and termination of pregnancy.
Example: Fetal demise at 17 weeks; cervical preparation overnight, D&E under sedation.
Usage notes
Cervical preparation with osmotic dilators or misoprostol beforehand reduces complications. D&E has a lower complication rate than induction of labor in experienced hands. Access to the procedure varies widely by state law in the US.
