1. Endometrial biopsy

Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations

Office procedure in which a thin flexible tube is passed through the cervix to sample the lining of the uterus, used to evaluate abnormal or postmenopausal bleeding and to detect hyperplasia or cancer.

Example: Postmenopausal bleeding, endometrial stripe 7 mm; EMB with Pipelle, pathology pending.

The procedure takes a few minutes and causes cramping. Biopsy is recommended for abnormal bleeding in women 45 and older and in younger women with risk factors such as obesity or PCOS. Sampling can miss focal lesions, so persistent bleeding warrants hysteroscopy. Pregnancy must be excluded first.

2. Ethambutol

Medical · Drug Abbreviations

First-line antituberculosis drug given in the initial phase of treatment, mainly to prevent resistance until drug susceptibility results are known. It can be stopped early if the strain proves fully susceptible.

Example: EMB 1,200 mg daily; baseline visual acuity and red-green color testing done.

The main toxicity is optic neuritis, which first shows as loss of red-green color discrimination, so patients have vision checks before and during therapy. Doses are reduced in kidney impairment. It is generally avoided in young children who cannot report visual changes reliably.
