EFV stands for Efavirenz, a drug abbreviation.

Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor that was long a first-line HIV drug, notably in Atripla, the first complete HIV regimen in a single daily pill (2006). It is now used less in high-income countries.

Example: EFV 600 mg at bedtime on an empty stomach to reduce dizziness.

Usage notes

Efavirenz commonly causes vivid dreams, dizziness and mood changes in the first weeks, and has been linked to depression. Genetic variants in CYP2B6 lead to high blood levels and more side effects in some people. The WHO shifted from efavirenz to dolutegravir-based first-line therapy in 2019.
