1. Dead Sea Scrolls

Collection of ancient Jewish manuscripts discovered between 1947 and 1956 in caves near Qumran by the Dead Sea, dating from about the third century BC to the first century AD. They include the oldest known copies of books of the Hebrew Bible.
Example: The Great Isaiah Scroll from the DSS is displayed in Jerusalem's Shrine of the Book.
About 900 manuscripts were recovered from 11 caves, many in fragments. Besides biblical books, the scrolls include community rules and commentaries often linked to the Essenes. Citation codes such as 1QIsaa identify cave, site and text.
2. Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (docusate sodium)

Stool softener, best known as Colace, that lets water mix into stool. It is one of the most frequently prescribed hospital laxatives, often in bowel regimens for patients on opioids.
Example: Bowel regimen: DSS 100 mg BID plus senna 2 tabs nightly while on oxycodone.
Despite its popularity, controlled trials have found little evidence that docusate works better than placebo, and many hospitals have removed it from opioid bowel protocols in favor of senna or polyethylene glycol. Its chemical name explains the older abbreviation "DOSS" also seen in references.
3. Dear stepson

Code for the poster's stepson on blended-family and parenting forums, as in "DSS stays with us every other weekend."
Example: DSS is coming for the holidays and I want him to feel at home.
