1. Good News Translation
Religion · Religious Term Abbreviations
Plain-English Bible translation by the American Bible Society, first issued as the New Testament "Good News for Modern Man" in 1966 and as the full Bible in 1976. It was originally called Today's English Version (TEV).
Example: The hospital chaplain hands out pocket GNT New Testaments.
The translation was designed for readers whose first language is not English and for children, using a limited vocabulary. Line drawings by Annie Vallotton illustrated many editions. In scholarship, GNT also means the United Bible Societies' Greek New Testament.
2. Greek New Testament (United Bible Societies)
Religion · Religious Term Abbreviations
Critical edition of the New Testament in Greek published by the United Bible Societies for translators, now in its fifth edition (UBS5, 2014). Its text is the same as the Nestle-Aland 28th edition, but its notes focus on variants important for translation.
Example: Seminary students parse verbs from the UBS5 GNT in first-year Greek.
The UBS edition grades textual decisions from A (certain) to D. It was first published in 1966. The Good News Translation shares the abbreviation, so context matters.
