Religion · Bible Book Abbreviations
Poetic book of 42 chapters exploring why the righteous suffer, as the blameless Job loses his family, wealth and health and argues with three friends before God answers from a whirlwind. Job's words "the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away" (1:21) are recited at funerals.
Example: God's speeches from the whirlwind fill Jb 38–41.
SBL and Chicago's traditional list do not abbreviate Job, but Catholic Bibles and Chicago's short forms use Jb. The name is pronounced "jobe", unlike the English word "job". The expression "the patience of Job" comes from the Letter of James.
