Heb. stands for Hebrews, a Bible book abbreviation.
Sermon-like letter of 13 chapters, author unknown, arguing that Christ is superior to angels, Moses and the Levitical priesthood. Chapter 11, the "hall of faith," opens "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
Example: The faith chapter, Heb. 11, lists Abel, Noah, Abraham and Moses as examples.
Usage notes
Older Bibles titled it "The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Hebrews", but scholars since the early church have doubted Pauline authorship; Origen wrote that only God knows who wrote it. SBL and short forms write Heb, which can also abbreviate the Hebrew language.
