HCMC stands for Ho Chi Minh City, a city and neighborhood abbreviation.

Vietnam's largest city and economic center, renamed from Saigon in 1976 after the end of the Vietnam War. In 2025 it absorbed two neighboring provinces, giving it about 14 million people.

Example: Motorbikes outnumber cars many times over on HCMC's streets.

Usage notes

Residents and businesses still widely call the city Saigon, and the river that runs through it is still the Saigon River. The airport code SGN preserves the old name.
