CategoriesReligion

INRI stands for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews), a religious term abbreviation.

Initials of the Latin inscription that, according to John 19:19–20, Pontius Pilate had placed above Jesus on the cross, written in Hebrew, Greek and Latin. The letters appear on many crucifixes and in religious art.

Example: The carved INRI plaque sits above the figure on the church's large crucifix.

Usage notes

Eastern Orthodox crucifixes often use the Greek initials ΙΝΒΙ instead. Each Gospel records the inscription slightly differently. In Latin, I and J were not distinguished, which is why the letters begin with I.
