BRVO stands for Branch retinal vein occlusion, an ophthalmology & ENT abbreviation.
Blockage of a branch of the retinal vein, typically where an artery crosses over it, causing hemorrhages in one sector of the retina and blurred vision if the macula is involved. It is more common than central retinal vein occlusion.
Example: Superotemporal BRVO OD with macular edema; anti-VEGF initiated.
Usage notes
Hypertension is the strongest risk factor. The Branch Vein Occlusion Study (1984) established laser treatment for macular edema and new vessels, and anti-VEGF injections have since become first-line for edema. Many cases improve partly over months.
