1. Conductive hearing loss
Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations
Hearing loss caused by a problem conducting sound through the outer or middle ear, such as earwax blockage, fluid, eardrum perforation or otosclerosis. It is often treatable with medical care or surgery.
Example: Left CHL with 25 dB air-bone gap; tympanometry flat, middle ear effusion.
An audiogram shows an "air-bone gap": bone conduction thresholds are normal while air conduction thresholds are worse. On tuning fork testing, sound lateralizes to the affected ear and bone conduction is louder than air conduction. Mixed hearing loss combines conductive and sensorineural components.
2. Canadian Hockey League
Sports · Sports League and Organization Abbreviations
Umbrella organization for Canada's three major junior hockey leagues: the Ontario Hockey League, the Western Hockey League and the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League. Players aged roughly 16 to 20 compete, and the three league champions plus a host team play for the Memorial Cup.
Example: Most first-round NHL draft picks from Canada come straight out of the CHL.
CHL players were long treated as professionals by the NCAA and lost college eligibility, but the NCAA voted in November 2024 to let them play college hockey from August 2025. Several US cities, including Seattle, Spokane and Erie, have CHL teams. The unrelated Central Hockey League, a US minor league, also used the initials until it folded in 2014.
