1. Adenosine triphosphate
Science & Engineering · Biology Abbreviations
The cell's energy currency: a nucleotide whose three phosphate groups release usable energy when the outer one is split off, powering muscle contraction, nerve signaling and biosynthesis. Cells regenerate ATP constantly, mainly in mitochondria through cellular respiration, so a person recycles roughly their own body weight of it each day.
Example: Firefly luciferase emits light in proportion to the ATP present, so the swab test shows how clean a surface is.
Karl Lohmann discovered ATP in 1929, and Fritz Lipmann proposed its role as the universal energy carrier in 1941. Paul Boyer and John Walker shared the 1997 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for explaining ATP synthase, a rotating molecular motor that makes ATP. Hygiene tests in food plants and hospitals measure ATP as a marker of organic residue.
2. Association of Tennis Professionals
Sports · Sports League and Organization Abbreviations
Body that runs the men's professional tennis circuit, including the ATP Tour, the Challenger Tour and the weekly world rankings. Its season ends with the ATP Finals in November, contested by the top eight singles players and doubles teams of the year.
Example: Jannik Sinner finished 2024 as No. 1 in the ATP rankings.
Formed in 1972 as a players' union, the ATP took over running the men's circuit in 1990, when the ATP Tour replaced the old Grand Prix circuit. The Grand Slam tournaments are run by national federations, not the ATP, although they award ranking points. In biology and medicine ATP is adenosine triphosphate, an unrelated meaning.
3. At this point
Texting & Internet Slang · Gen Z Slang Abbreviations
Expresses resignation, frustration or a shift in perspective after repeated problems, as in "atp I'm just gonna walk." Common among Gen Z in texts, tweets and TikTok comments.
Example: Atp I'm just gonna cancel my subscription and read a book.
Often signals giving up after something has failed too many times, or admitting a situation has become absurd ("atp he's family"). In tennis ATP is the Association of Tennis Professionals, and in biology adenosine triphosphate, the molecule cells use for energy; the sentence makes the slang sense clear.
4. Airline transport pilot
Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations
Highest level of FAA pilot certificate, required for both captains and first officers at US scheduled airlines. Applicants generally need 1,500 flight hours, must be at least 23 years old and must complete an ATP certification training program.
Example: With the ATP in hand and 1,600 hours logged, she accepted a first officer job at a regional airline.
A restricted ATP (R-ATP) lets first officers be hired with fewer hours: 750 for former military pilots, 1,000 for graduates of approved four-year aviation degrees and 1,250 for associate degrees, with a minimum age of 21. The mandatory ATP certification training program (ATP-CTP) has been required since August 2014.
