1. Adenosine diphosphate
Science & Engineering · Biology Abbreviations
Nucleotide formed when ATP loses one phosphate group to release energy; ATP synthase then adds a phosphate back to ADP, completing the cycle that powers cells. ADP released by damaged blood vessels also activates platelets, which is why drugs such as clopidogrel block ADP receptors.
Example: During intense exercise, ADP accumulates in muscle and signals the cell to increase ATP production.
The ratio of ATP to ADP is a key gauge of a cell's energy status. When ADP is further broken down to AMP, the enzyme AMP-activated protein kinase senses the energy shortfall. Biochemists sometimes write Pi for the inorganic phosphate released when ATP becomes ADP.
2. Average draft position
Sports · American Football Abbreviations
Average spot at which a player is chosen across many fantasy drafts on a platform, used to judge value. Taking a player well ahead of his ADP is called a reach.
Example: His ADP slipped to the fourth round after reports of a hamstring injury.
Calculated from mock and real drafts on fantasy sites such as ESPN, Yahoo and Sleeper, and used in fantasy baseball, basketball and hockey as well. In biochemistry ADP stands for adenosine diphosphate.
3. Automatic Data Processing
Organizations & Companies · Company and Brand Abbreviations
American provider of payroll, HR and benefits software and services, processing paychecks for millions of workers. Its monthly National Employment Report on private-sector jobs is closely watched by economists.
Example: The ADP report showed private employers added 150,000 jobs last month.
Founded in 1949 in Paterson, New Jersey, by Henry Taub as Automatic Payrolls, Inc., and renamed in 1958. Headquartered in Roseland, New Jersey. Former US Senator Frank Lautenberg was an early partner and later its chief executive.
