CategoriesSports

2PT stands for Two-point conversion, an American football abbreviation.

Scrimmage play after a touchdown in which the offense tries to reach the end zone again, from the 2-yard line in the NFL, for two points instead of kicking for one. Teams go for two when the margin makes it worthwhile, especially late in close games.

Example: Their 2PT pass fell incomplete, so the Eagles still trailed by four with five minutes left.

Usage notes

Adopted by college football in 1958 and by the NFL in 1994; the AFL used it from 1960 to 1969. Coaches consult charts that show when going for two is favored by the score difference. Also written 2-PT or "2-pt conversion" in scoring summaries.
