D2 stands for Division II (NCAA), a sports league and organization abbreviation.
Middle tier of NCAA athletics, with about 300 mostly smaller public and private schools. Athletes can receive partial scholarships, which coaches often divide among several players in what are called equivalency sports.
Example: After two years at a D2 school in Florida, she transferred to a larger program in the Big 12.
Usage notes
Also written "Division 2", "DII" or "D-II". Programs typically have smaller budgets and regional travel, and several Division II championships are staged together at a multi-sport national championships festival. Well-known D2 conferences include the Gulf South, the Lone Star Conference and the GLIAC in the Great Lakes region.
