AOM stands for Acute otitis media, an ophthalmology & ENT abbreviation.
Rapid-onset middle ear infection with fluid behind a bulging, inflamed eardrum, causing ear pain, fever and irritability, most often in children aged 6 to 24 months. Common bacterial causes are Streptococcus pneumoniae, nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis.
Example: AOM right ear with bulging TM, fever 39.1; amoxicillin 90 mg/kg/day divided BID for 10 days.
Usage notes
The AAP's 2013 guideline requires a moderately to severely bulging eardrum, or mild bulging with recent ear pain or redness, for diagnosis. High-dose amoxicillin is first-line, and observation without antibiotics is an option for some children over six months with nonsevere illness and reliable follow-up. Pain relief is part of every treatment plan.
