1. Texas
Geography & Places · US State Abbreviations
An independent republic from 1836 to 1845, Texas was admitted on December 29, 1845, as the 28th state. It is the second-largest state by both area and population; Austin is the capital, Houston the largest city, and the Lone Star State has 254 counties, the most of any state.
Example: Ship the replacement router to our Lubbock, TX 79401 store.
Texas is one of the eight states AP never abbreviates, in datelines or text, although the traditional Tex. remains in older documents and legal citations. TX was assigned in 1963. Do not confuse it with Tx, medical shorthand for treatment or transplant, or with TX meaning transmit in electronics.
2. Treatment (Tx)
Medical · Medical Documentation Abbreviations
Shorthand for treatment or therapy, used in plans, orders and notes to describe what was given or recommended. It covers medications, procedures and other interventions.
Example: Tx: IV ceftriaxone and azithromycin, supplemental O2, reassess in 48 hours.
Context changes its meaning: in transplant medicine Tx means transplant, as in "kidney Tx", and in blood banking it can mean transfusion. Some writers use Rx for treatment, but Rx properly means a prescription. Writing the word in full avoids confusion when several meanings are plausible.
