K8s stands for Kubernetes, a cloud computing abbreviation.
An open-source platform for automating the deployment, scaling and management of containerized applications across clusters of machines. It schedules containers into pods, restarts failed ones, balances traffic and rolls out updates.
Example: The app runs on K8s with three replicas and scales up automatically when CPU passes 70 percent.
Usage notes
The name comes from the Greek for "helmsman". Designed at Google, drawing on its internal Borg system, it was open-sourced in 2014, and version 1.0 arrived in 2015 alongside the founding of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. The numeronym K8s replaces the eight letters between K and s. Managed versions include EKS, GKE and AKS, and its complexity is a frequent complaint from small teams.
