IaaS stands for Infrastructure as a service, a cloud computing abbreviation.
The cloud model that rents out raw computing resources, such as virtual machines, storage, networks and load balancers, on demand, while customers manage the operating systems and software on top. Amazon EC2, Azure Virtual Machines and Google Compute Engine are IaaS.
Example: Lifting the data center onto IaaS let us retire 200 physical servers without rewriting the apps.
Usage notes
Amazon Web Services launched the modern IaaS market with S3 and EC2 in 2006. Under the shared responsibility model, the provider secures the physical infrastructure while the customer secures operating systems, applications and access settings. Pay-per-use pricing suits variable workloads but can surprise teams with large bills. Pronounced "eye-as".
