ASCVD stands for Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, a cardiology abbreviation.
Collective term for conditions caused by atherosclerotic plaque: coronary heart disease, ischemic stroke and TIA, and peripheral artery disease. US cholesterol guidelines are built around ASCVD risk, using a calculated 10-year probability of a first event to guide decisions about statins.
Example: Calculated 10-year ASCVD risk is 9.2%, so a moderate-intensity statin was discussed with the patient.
Usage notes
The 2013 ACC/AHA cholesterol guideline introduced the Pooled Cohort Equations; the AHA's PREVENT equations, published in 2023, add kidney function and estimate risk from age 30. "Clinical ASCVD" means the patient already has established disease, placing them in a secondary-prevention group regardless of calculated risk. Pronounced letter by letter.
