AVRT stands for Atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia, a cardiology abbreviation.
Reentrant tachycardia that uses an accessory pathway connecting atria and ventricles, as in Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. In orthodromic AVRT, the usual type, impulses travel down the AV node and back up the accessory pathway, giving a narrow QRS.
Example: Inducible orthodromic AVRT via a left lateral accessory pathway, successfully ablated.
Usage notes
Antidromic AVRT conducts down the accessory pathway and produces a wide QRS that can mimic ventricular tachycardia. AV nodal blockers must be used cautiously in pre-excited atrial fibrillation, because blocking the node can force rapid conduction down the pathway and trigger ventricular fibrillation. AVRT is the most common SVT mechanism in young children.
