CategoriesMedical

BiV stands for Biventricular, a cardiology abbreviation.

Describes pacing of both the right and left ventricles, the core of cardiac resynchronization therapy, as well as biventricular assist devices and biventricular heart failure. The "BiV pacing percentage" on device checks shows how often resynchronization is actually delivered.

Example: Device check: BiV pacing 91% due to frequent PVCs; PVC suppression discussed.

Usage notes

Pronounced "bye-vee." Loss of biventricular pacing, often from atrial fibrillation with fast conduction or frequent ectopy, reduces the benefit of CRT. A BiVAD supports both ventricles mechanically, unlike an LVAD, which supports only the left. Capitalization varies between BiV, BIV and biV.
