1. Bare-metal stent

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Coronary or peripheral stent made of uncoated metal mesh, the original stent type before drug-eluting designs. It holds the artery open but carries a higher risk of restenosis from scar tissue growth, typically within six months.

Example: Old BMS in the circumflex from 2001 with diffuse in-stent restenosis on today's angiogram.

Bare-metal stents became standard in the late 1990s, reducing abrupt closure after balloon angioplasty. They were once preferred for patients who could not take long dual antiplatelet therapy, but trials such as LEADERS FREE (2015) and SENIOR (2018) showed that modern drug-eluting stents do better even with short antiplatelet courses. BMS remain in use in some peripheral and large vessels.

2. Battery management system

Science & Engineering · Energy Abbreviations

Electronics that monitor and protect a rechargeable battery pack, measuring cell voltages, currents and temperatures, balancing cells, estimating state of charge and health, and shutting the pack down if limits are exceeded. Every EV, laptop and grid battery relies on one.

Example: The BMS limited charging speed because cell temperatures were near freezing.

Good BMS design prevents overcharging and overheating that can trigger thermal runaway in lithium-ion cells. It also communicates with chargers and the vehicle to set safe charging rates. In building management BMS means building management system, an unrelated term.

3. Bristol Myers Squibb

Organizations & Companies · Company and Brand Abbreviations

American pharmaceutical company making medicines for cancer, heart disease and immune disorders, including the cancer immunotherapy Opdivo and the blood thinner Eliquis, co-marketed with Pfizer.

Example: BMS shares jumped after its schizophrenia drug won FDA approval.

Formed in 1989 by the merger of Bristol-Myers and E. R. Squibb & Sons, both founded in the nineteenth century. The company dropped the hyphen from its name in 2020. It acquired Celgene in 2019 for about $74 billion.
