BESS stands for Battery energy storage system, an energy abbreviation.
Large installation of rechargeable batteries, usually lithium-ion, with inverters and controls, that stores electricity and releases it to the grid or a facility when needed. Grid batteries shift solar power into the evening, stabilize frequency and provide backup.
Example: The 400 MW BESS charges from midday solar and discharges during the evening peak.
Usage notes
South Australia's Hornsdale Power Reserve, built by Tesla in 2017 as the world's largest lithium-ion battery at the time, showed how quickly batteries can respond to grid faults. California and Texas have since installed many gigawatts of battery storage. A fire at the Moss Landing facility in California in January 2025 renewed debate over BESS safety and siting.
