1. California Highway Patrol
Government & Politics · Police Abbreviations
California state law enforcement agency that patrols state highways and freeways, investigates traffic collisions and protects state buildings and officials. It is the largest state police agency in the United States.
Example: CHP issued a SigAlert after a big rig overturned and blocked three lanes of the 405.
Created in 1929 and merged with the state police in 1995. CHP officers investigate crashes on unincorporated roads as well as freeways. The TV series "CHiPs," which aired from 1977 to 1983, made the agency famous. Its officers report as "TC" (traffic collision) on incident logs.
2. Combined heat and power
Science & Engineering · Energy Abbreviations
Generating electricity and useful heat from the same fuel at the same time, also called cogeneration. By capturing heat that conventional power plants waste, CHP systems at factories, hospitals, universities and district heating networks reach total efficiencies of 65-80%.
Example: The campus CHP plant supplies electricity and steam for heating all the dormitories.
Thomas Edison's Pearl Street Station in Manhattan (1882) sold waste steam to nearby buildings, an early example. Denmark and Finland use CHP extensively for district heating. Small "micro-CHP" units for homes exist but have seen limited uptake.
