CODIS stands for Combined DNA Index System, a police abbreviation.
FBI-run network of DNA databases that lets local, state and national crime labs compare DNA profiles from crime scenes with profiles of offenders, arrestees and missing persons. It has produced hundreds of thousands of investigative leads.
Example: The rape kit profile got a CODIS hit to a man convicted of burglary in another state.
Usage notes
The national level is the National DNA Index System (NDIS), operational since 1998. States set their own rules on whose DNA is collected; many now include people arrested for certain felonies, upheld by the Supreme Court in Maryland v. King (2013). Investigative genetic genealogy uses separate consumer databases, not CODIS.
