1. Crisis intervention team
Government & Politics · Police Abbreviations
Program that trains police officers to recognize and de-escalate encounters with people in mental health crises, often in partnership with mental health providers. CIT-trained officers aim to divert people to treatment rather than jail.
Example: Dispatch requested a CIT officer for the man threatening to jump from the overpass.
Known as the Memphis Model, CIT was created in 1988 after Memphis police fatally shot a man in crisis. A typical course lasts 40 hours. Many cities now add co-responder teams or civilian crisis responders who handle some calls without police.
2. United States Court of International Trade
Law & Legal · Court Abbreviations
Federal trial court in New York City with nationwide jurisdiction over civil actions involving customs duties, tariff classification, antidumping and countervailing duty determinations, and other import laws. Its nine judges have life tenure under Article III, and appeals go to the Federal Circuit.
Example: The importer challenged the tariff classification at the CIT after Customs denied its protest.
The Bluebook abbreviates the court as "Ct. Int'l Trade"; CIT is the everyday form. It replaced the United States Customs Court in 1980. In 2025 it ruled on major challenges to tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. In tax writing, CIT more often means corporate income tax.
