Cal. Ct. App. stands for California Court of Appeal, a court abbreviation.

California's intermediate appellate court, organized into six appellate districts with divisions in cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, Fresno and San Jose. Its published opinions bind all California trial courts.

Example: The ruling was reversed in an unpublished Cal. Ct. App. opinion that cannot be cited as precedent.

Usage notes

The official name is singular, "Court of Appeal", unlike most states' "Court of Appeals". California Rules of Court, rule 8.1115, generally bars citing unpublished opinions in state courts. The California Style Manual cites to Cal.App. without naming the court, while the Bluebook adds "Cal. Ct. App." in the parenthetical.
