1. Bankruptcy Appellate Panel

Law & Legal · Court Abbreviations

Three-judge panel of sitting bankruptcy judges that hears appeals from bankruptcy court orders as an alternative to review by a district judge. BAPs currently operate in the First, Sixth, Eighth, Ninth and Tenth Circuits, and any party can opt out and send the appeal to the district court instead.

Example: The trustee appealed the discharge order to the BAP rather than to the district court.

The Ninth Circuit's panel, dating from 1979, is the oldest and busiest. Amendments in 1994 directed every circuit to establish one unless it lacked the resources; several, such as the Second Circuit, later ended theirs. BAP decisions can be appealed to the court of appeals. Bluebook parenthetical: "(B.A.P. 9th Cir. 2015)".

2. Baptized (bap.)

Writing & Everyday · Genealogy Abbreviations

Records a baptism date and place, especially from church registers, in genealogies where birth dates are unknown, as in "bap. 12 May 1749."

Example: Sarah Wells, bap. 4 June 1781 at St. Giles, daughter of William and Ann Wells.

Before civil registration of births began in England and Wales in 1837, baptism records were the main evidence of birth, so many family trees give baptism dates instead. Variants include bapt. and chr. (christened). Infant baptism usually followed birth by days or weeks.
