Interior Department bureau that carries out the federal trust responsibility to more than 570 federally recognized tribes, managing about 55 million acres held in trust and supporting tribal law enforcement, roads, social services and governments. It is led by a Director under the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs.
Example: The tribe asked the BIA to take the parcel into trust so it could build housing.
Created in 1824 within the War Department, it moved to the Interior Department in 1849. Its history includes boarding-school and land-allotment policies that the federal government has since formally acknowledged as harmful. Schools are now run by the separate Bureau of Indian Education. In immigration law, BIA means the Board of Immigration Appeals.

Highest administrative body for interpreting and applying US immigration law, sitting within the Executive Office for Immigration Review. It hears appeals from immigration judges and certain DHS decisions, and its published decisions bind immigration judges and DHS officers nationwide.
Example: The BIA dismissed the appeal, agreeing that the respondent had not shown a well-founded fear of persecution.
Created in 1940. Precedent decisions are cited to Administrative Decisions under Immigration and Nationality Laws, as in "Matter of Acosta, 19 I. & N. Dec. 211 (B.I.A. 1985)". Petitions for review of its decisions go to the federal courts of appeals. In other settings BIA means the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
