1. Bleomycin, etoposide, Platinol (cisplatin)
Medical · Hematology and Oncology Abbreviations
Standard chemotherapy for testicular and other germ cell tumors, given in 21-day cycles, typically three or four cycles depending on risk group. It cures most patients, even with widespread metastases.
Example: Intermediate-risk nonseminoma: BEP x4; baseline PFTs before bleomycin.
Cisplatin-based chemotherapy, developed largely by Lawrence Einhorn at Indiana University in the 1970s, made metastatic testicular cancer one of the most curable solid tumors. Bleomycin can cause lung scarring, so lung function is monitored and high-oxygen exposure is avoided later in life. Long-term survivors are monitored for hearing loss, kidney effects, cardiovascular disease and second cancers.
2. Bureau of Engraving and Printing
Government & Politics · US Federal Agency Abbreviations
Designs and prints Federal Reserve notes, the paper currency of the United States, at facilities in Washington, D.C., and Fort Worth, Texas. This Treasury bureau prints billions of notes a year to fill orders placed by the Federal Reserve.
Example: Visitors to the BEP in Fort Worth can watch sheets of $20 bills roll off the presses.
Established in 1862, it also printed postage stamps until 2005. Coins are not made here; the separate US Mint strikes them. Security features on modern notes, such as color-shifting ink and the 3-D security ribbon on the $100 bill, are developed together with the Federal Reserve and the Secret Service.
3. Break-even point
Business & Finance · Accounting Abbreviations
Level of sales, in units or revenue, at which total revenue equals total costs, so the business makes neither a profit nor a loss. It equals fixed costs divided by contribution margin per unit.
Example: With fixed costs of $240,000 and a $40 contribution per unit, the BEP is 6,000 units.
Above the break-even point every additional unit adds its contribution margin to profit. Break-even analysis is a staple of business plans and loan applications. In options trading, the break-even price is the underlying price at which a position neither gains nor loses at expiration.
