ASCT stands for Autologous stem cell transplant, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.

Procedure in which a patient's own blood stem cells are collected and frozen, high-dose chemotherapy is given, and the cells are reinfused to rescue the bone marrow. It is standard consolidation for many patients with multiple myeloma and for relapsed lymphoma.

Example: High-dose melphalan 200 mg/m2 followed by ASCT; neutrophil engraftment on day 12.

Usage notes

Because the cells are the patient's own, there is no risk of graft-versus-host disease, and treatment-related mortality is low, usually under a few percent. The benefit comes from allowing chemotherapy doses that would otherwise permanently destroy the marrow. Some centers perform it as an outpatient procedure. Stem cells can also be stored for a later second transplant.
