ALL stands for Acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.

Fast-growing cancer of immature lymphocytes in the bone marrow, the most common cancer in children, with a peak between ages 2 and 5. It causes fatigue, pallor, bruising, bone pain, fevers and infections as leukemia cells crowd out normal blood production.

Example: Four-year-old with pallor, petechiae and WBC 86,000 with 80% blasts: B-cell ALL, induction started.

Usage notes

Cure rates in children now approach 90 percent, one of the major successes of modern medicine, though outcomes in adults are lower. Treatment lasts about two to three years. Newer immunotherapies include blinatumomab and CAR-T therapy; the first CAR-T approval in 2017 was for children and young adults with relapsed ALL. Also called acute lymphocytic leukemia.
