1. Anti-money laundering
Business & Finance · Banking Abbreviations
Laws, regulations and internal controls designed to stop criminals from disguising illegally obtained money as legitimate income through banks and other businesses. AML programs include customer checks, transaction monitoring, suspicious activity reporting and staff training.
Example: The bank's AML team flagged a series of cash deposits just under $10,000.
International AML standards are set by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), established in 1989. In the US, the Bank Secrecy Act is the core AML law; the EU has a series of AML directives and a new Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA) based in Frankfurt. Laundering is classically described in three stages: placement, layering and integration.
2. Acute myeloid leukemia
Medical · Hematology and Oncology Abbreviations
Aggressive cancer of immature myeloid cells that rapidly crowds out normal blood production, causing anemia, infections and bleeding. It is the most common acute leukemia in adults, with a median age at diagnosis in the late 60s.
Example: AML with NPM1 mutation, FLT3 negative; 7+3 induction planned, bone marrow day 14.
Treatment is guided by genetic and molecular findings, such as FLT3, NPM1, IDH1/2 and TP53 mutations, which determine risk and targeted drugs. Fit patients receive intensive induction chemotherapy, often followed by allogeneic stem cell transplant, while older or frail patients commonly receive venetoclax with a hypomethylating agent. Needle-like Auer rods in blasts are a classic microscopic clue.
