AUSA stands for Assistant United States Attorney, a court abbreviation.
Federal prosecutor or civil litigator working in one of the 94 US Attorney's offices under the presidentially appointed US Attorney for that district. AUSAs present cases to grand juries, try criminal cases, handle appeals, and defend or bring civil suits on behalf of the United States.
Example: The AUSA told the judge the government would seek a sentence within the guidelines range.
Usage notes
Pronounced as letters. AUSAs are career Justice Department lawyers who usually remain through changes of administration, unlike the US Attorney. Offices divide into criminal and civil divisions. There are 94 districts but only 93 US Attorneys, because Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands share one.
