DER stands for Distributed energy resource, an energy abbreviation.
Small-scale power source or controllable load connected near the point of use, such as rooftop solar, home batteries, EV chargers, small wind turbines, backup generators and smart thermostats. Utilities and grid operators increasingly coordinate DERs to support the grid.
Example: Over 40% of the neighborhood's homes now have some DER, mostly solar with batteries.
Usage notes
FERC Order 2222, issued in 2020, requires US wholesale electricity markets to let aggregations of DERs participate. Large numbers of DERs can strain local distribution circuits, requiring upgrades and smarter controls. Grouped together, they form virtual power plants.
