1. Carbon capture and storage

Science & Engineering · Environmental Abbreviations

Process of capturing carbon dioxide from power plants, factories or the air, compressing it and injecting it deep underground into rock formations for permanent storage. CCS is seen as important for hard-to-decarbonize industries such as cement and steel, but global capacity remains small.

Example: Norway's Sleipner CCS project has injected about one million tonnes of CO2 a year under the North Sea since 1996.

Operating facilities worldwide capture on the order of 50 million tonnes of CO2 a year, a small fraction of total emissions, and much captured CO2 has been used to push more oil out of wells. Critics argue CCS can prolong fossil fuel use. In electric vehicles CCS means the Combined Charging System plug.

2. Combined Charging System

Science & Engineering · Energy Abbreviations · also used in transportation

EV charging standard that combines an AC charging plug with two extra large pins for DC fast charging in one connector. CCS1 is used in North America and CCS2 in Europe, where it is mandatory for public fast chargers.

Example: The European rental car came with a CCS2 inlet and charged at 150 kW on the motorway.

Developed by German and US automakers and promoted by the CharIN association, CCS became the main non-Tesla standard in the 2010s. In North America most automakers have since moved to the NACS connector. In climate policy CCS means carbon capture and storage, a different term.

3. Canadian Cardiovascular Society

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Professional society whose angina grading scale classifies chest pain severity from class I (angina only with strenuous or prolonged exertion) to class IV (angina with any physical activity or at rest). The society also publishes Canadian guidelines on atrial fibrillation, heart failure and lipids.

Example: Exertional angina after walking two blocks or climbing one flight of stairs: CCS class II.

The angina scale was introduced in 1976 by Lucien Campeau and remains a standard way to describe stable angina in referrals, trials and revascularization decisions. It parallels the NYHA scale for heart failure symptoms. In current European terminology CCS also means chronic coronary syndrome.

4. Chronic coronary syndrome

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Term introduced by the European Society of Cardiology in 2019 for the stable phases of coronary artery disease, replacing "stable coronary artery disease." It covers patients with stable angina, those recently stabilized after an acute coronary syndrome, and people with known disease who have no symptoms.

Example: The ESC CCS guideline favors coronary CT angiography as a first test when the probability of disease is low to intermediate.

The 2023 AHA/ACC guideline uses the parallel term "chronic coronary disease" (CCD). The label emphasizes that coronary disease is dynamic: plaque can progress or stabilize at any time, so "stable" was considered misleading. In angina grading, CCS more often refers to the Canadian Cardiovascular Society class, from I (angina only with strenuous exertion) to IV (angina at rest).
