NACS stands for North American Charging Standard, an energy abbreviation also used in transportation.
EV charging connector developed by Tesla and opened to other manufacturers in 2022, now standardized as SAE J3400. Its compact plug handles both AC and DC charging, and most automakers selling in North America have announced plans to adopt it.
Example: With an adapter, the Ford owner can now use NACS Superchargers along the interstate.
Usage notes
Ford's announcement in May 2023 that it would adopt Tesla's connector triggered a wave of similar decisions by other automakers. SAE International published J3400 to make the connector an industry standard. Charging networks are adding NACS cables alongside CCS1 during the transition.
