NYHA stands for New York Heart Association, a cardiology abbreviation.

Organization best known for its functional classification of heart failure, which grades symptoms from class I (no limitation of physical activity) to class IV (symptoms at rest). Clinical trials, guidelines and device criteria use NYHA class to define eligibility.

Example: Dyspnea walking one block, comfortable at rest: NYHA class III.

Usage notes

First published in 1928 and revised several times, the scale defines class II as slight limitation with ordinary activity and class III as marked limitation with less than ordinary activity. It is subjective and can improve or worsen between visits, unlike the ACC/AHA stages A to D, which only progress. Spoken letter by letter.
